Cornerstone Set For New High School | Winchester Star

November 21, 2011

BERRYVILLE- Members from the local Masonic lodge laid the symbolic cornerstone for the new Clarke County High School on Saturday.

The ceremony symbolized the near-completion of the 161,000-square-foot school, which is scheduled to be finished by March 23. It will open for students in the fall of 2012.

Masonic cornerstone laying is performed only on school buildings, public structures or places of worship. School Superintendent Mike Murphy sought the help from the masons as a way to bring about pride and tradition. "It's really about reaching out and instilling a sense of community pride," Murphy said. "This is a community school. We want people to take pride in it."

The 200-pound granite cornerstone is inscribed with the year 2012.

Howard Shockey & Sons of Winchester is building the new school for a bid price of $23.3 million.
